In order to solve this world problem, Zhang Wanbin led the chiral synthesis and catalysis team. Since 2005, he has made arduous explorations and efforts, and finally made significant progress. They used a specific catalyst discovered by themselves to reduce the dihydroartemisinin obtained after the reduction of artemisinic acid through a conventional synthesis route without light, so that dihydroartemisinic acid can be easily and efficiently obtained. Then, artemisinin can be obtained in high yield through oxidative rearrangement. Zhang Wanbin told reporters: "This method has a short synthetic route and a high yield because it does not require special chemical reaction conditions such as light, and is suitable for large-scale industrial production." Relevant experts believe that the major breakthrough point of this achievement is that the raw materials can be extracted Artemisinin waste or monosaccharide bio-fermentation uses key catalysts to achieve conventional chemical synthesis, which is convenient for large-scale and industrial production. At the same time, artemisinin is obtained with a high yield close to 60%, and the synthesis efficiency is high. This achievement is expected to solve the major problem of high-efficiency artificial synthesis of artemisinin that has plagued the world pharmaceutical industry for more than 30 years, making artemisinin drugs cheaper and easier to obtain. Lin Guoqiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Chemistry Department of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, commented that this is a major progress made by Chinese scientists in the field of high-efficiency artificial synthesis of artemisinin, and it may turn large-scale production of artemisinin into reality. At the same time, he pointed out: "It really has a long way to go to become a class of artemisinin drugs." It is reported that this achievement has now completed the patent layout and is ready to apply for international patents. The research team is planning a pilot scale-up and industrialization plan to accelerate the industrialization process.
